Trucker Jobs in North Dakota

Jobs 1 to 11 of 140

A noted strong survivor of the Great Recession, North Dakota has weathered nationwide financial maladies due to an abundance in natural resources, specifically oil extraction which has led to a state-wide expansion in jobs. In regards to other types of oil, the state of North Dakota is a largest producer in the country for canola, flaxseed and sunflower oil as well as several other agricultural commodities. The state’s public roads system is perhaps best known for I-94, leading motorists into Montana and Missouri. North Dakota is unique in that its roadways are constructed out of concrete as opposed to blacktop to survive the harsh weather conditions the state faces.

Truck Driving Jobs in North Dakota

As tough as it is in today's job market, there is an abundance of jobs in the trucking industry and extremely high paying trucking jobs in North Dakota.

North Dakota Sunset

The truck driving industry already has a high turn over but now with the demographic of experienced drivers reaching the retirement age and the recent oil boom of the last few years, North Dakota has been facing a perpetual shortage of drivers. Especially in the western North Dakota oil patches, where there is a huge demand for Class A drivers licensed to drive the largest semi trailers.

“The driver shortage is probably one of our biggest concerns,” said Tom Balzer, executive vice president of the North Dakota Motor Carriers Association.

North Dakota's 3.5% unemployment rate is the lowest in the country but in oil-field towns like Williston, Watford City and Belfield, unemployment is just 1.5% While there are jobs available in almost every sector, oil companies usually have the highest paying jobs where the average salary is $100,000 and often require little or no experience nor a college degree. Obviously any experienced driver will always get the competitive edge, but there are many quick training programs available in every state to better qualify new truck drivers as well.

The jobs and the high wages are certainly there, but applicants should also be prepared for the drawbacks inherent to North Dakota's oil industry as well. The long cold winters can certainly be difficult for some people and even more so when these oil industry jobs often require a lot of tough physical labor working outdoors.  But for many who don't mind the cold climates and even some who enjoy the physical challenge of old fashioned hard work, North Dakota's trucking industry offers a field of opportunity for you.

The number of workers still recognizing these job opportunities and flocking to North Dakota has created a sudden population influx that has also made housing a factor to consider as well. Such rapid job growth in the area has resulted in such a housing shortage that rental properties have skyrocketed, hotels and motels can be booked up sometimes months in advance and even the RV parks have waiting lists. Housing has become such an issue that new job applicants will likely be asked, “Do you have a place to live?”

While anyone will certainly gain the advantage of researching and lining up their accommodation ahead of time, some companies do provide housing for their employees and others provide resources to assist in the search.  MBI Energy is one such company employing almost 2000 truck drivers in the North Dakota oil patch, with at least four full-time employees specifically there to generate housing options for newcomers.

If you are willing to prepare and work within the limited housing options and if cold winters don't bother you more than the prospect of immediately earning higher wages, than North Dakota has the best truck driving jobs for you.  Once you decide the best place for you to apply, we're here to help you with the rest.
