Vermont has been known in recent years as one of the safest states in the country. Historically, Vermont was one of the first states to abolish slavery in part, and served as an important location for the underground railroad due to its geography. For motorists, there numbers are in a driver’s favor in Vermont, with nearly one car per person statistically speaking. Vermont is one of four states to ban billboards on its highways in an effort to promote safety and focus on the road. For the commercial driver, trucks weighing under 80,000 pounds are authorized to use the interstates, with the state road limit at 99,000 pounds. Trucks deemed too heavy for Vermont’s turnpikes can legally use the state’s secondary roads.

Vermont: Small State with Big Opportunity for truck drivers

Vermont, known as the Green Mountain State (“vert” and “mont”), was named by the French for its vast green forests which cover 78 percent of the state. It is the most rural state in the US, with only 32 percent of its population living in the cities. Most known for its natural breathtaking beauty, ski resorts and year round vacation spots; Vermont draws enough crowds to make tourism its primary industry.

Vermont

Bordered by New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Lake Champlain forming almost half the border and the Canadian province of Quebec, Vermont's proximity to nearby major US cities and ports such as New York, and short distance to the border, Vermont has a strong export industry based on its ability to transport its products. Most famous for its maple syrup produced by its vast forests of maple trees, Vermont is also dominant in dairy farming, apples, cheese and nursery products. Its most valuable resources are stone, asbestos, sand and gravel, marble and granite. Its leading manufactured products include machinery, precision instruments, computer components, food products, paper and plastics. Vermont is also well known for its Cottage industries state signature products with everything from knitwear to ice cream

Vermont depends on trucks to transport 97 percent of its goods and over 85 percent of its communities depend exclusively on trucks for the products used in their everyday lives. Not only does this reflect Vermont relying on the trucking industry more than any other state, the amount of products being transported is only getting higher as the economy grows back stronger and that means more trucks and more drivers are required to keep everything running. Just like many other states now progressing from the recession and seeing a growing shortage of truck drivers to move their products, Vermont is seeing a growing demand for truck drivers to keep its economy running as well.

In 2011, the trucking industry in Vermont provided 13,860 jobs, or one out of 17 in the state and with an average annual trucking industry salary of $42,571. Now the Vermont trucking industry has more truck driver jobs to fill and many companies are willing to pay higher wages or offer more incentives just to fill them.
